SANDLIGHT / 2008
The sandlight was made during a course dedicated to Romanticism. I took a trip with my class along with
our teacher to Landmannalaugar, which is in the highlands. After that trip I was deeply inspired and
fascinated by the beautiful nature, colors, materials etc.
The nature is a fragile but yet a powerful force. I wanted to combine the natural elements with man-made
light when I designed the Sandlight.
What is distinctive about the Sandlight is that it uses black finely grained sand as a natural dimmer.
The upper layer, made of glass, is covered with sand and one can control the amount of light that
shines through. It is possible to create patterns, strokes or whatever you want, just use your imagination!
The materials in the Sandlight are glass, sand and aluminium. Fluorescent bulbs are used to create an
unnatural light effect to contrast the natural element, sand.
The sandlight is also ideal for teachers to use as a tool to teach children who suffer from dyslexia. It is
a known fact that those children do find it easier to learn the alphabet if they can create the letters
three dimensionally.
